Pongal is the harvest festival of the Tamils, celebrated to express gratitude to the sun and the bounties of nature; this four-day festival is divided into Bhogi on the last day of the Tamil month of Margazhi, Pongal on the first day of Thai, Mattu Pongal on the second day, and Kaanum Pongal on the third day, and its highlight is the chanting of "Pongalo Pongal" as the rice overflows from the Pongal pot.
